There’s a strange habit in water storage planning: when people aren’t sure how much capacity they need, they often go bigger.

It feels safe. If 5,000 litres seems enough, why not install 10,000? At least there will always be extra water.

But extra capacity isn’t automatically useful capacity.

I’ve seen this happen on both residential and commercial projects. A tank is sized generously because nobody wants to risk running short, only for the property to use a fraction of that capacity most of the time. The owner has paid for the additional volume, the tank takes up more space, and years later the original reasoning is difficult to remember.

Good water storage planning is less about buying the biggest tank you can afford and more about understanding what your building actually needs.

 

Start With the Water Pattern, Not Just the Number

Daily consumption gives you a starting point, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

A family might use most of its water in the morning and evening. A small office may have relatively low demand during weekends. A hotel can experience a sharp increase in usage during particular hours. A factory may have completely different requirements depending on its production schedule.

So when someone asks, “How much storage do we need?” the useful answer isn’t always sitting in a simple daily-consumption calculation.

Look at when the water is being used.

Look at how frequently the supply arrives.

Look at what happens when demand suddenly increases.

That kind of planning can prevent a storage system from becoming unnecessarily large while still providing an appropriate buffer.

 

Bigger Tanks Need Bigger Spaces

This sounds obvious, but it is surprisingly easy to overlook during the planning stage.

A larger tank doesn’t just require more money. It requires more physical space.

A larger storage system can mean more area to clean, more space to access and more planning around surrounding equipment. If the tank is squeezed into a difficult location, routine maintenance can become unnecessarily awkward.
